Stories, Lies and Disinformation: A Series with Western New Mexico University Distinguished Visitor Nina Burleigh” is a set of two public lectures by the journalist and author, who has spent 30 years inside the national media bubble.
Part one, “Mass media and US politics from the printing press to Facebook,” is an overview of Burleigh’s career in journalism, covering events from the dirty politics of Chicago, to the White House and Congress in Washington, D.C, a few wars, a few crimes and two presidential campaigns. Burleigh will share stories from the front lines, and answer questions about how covering U.S. politics has changed as paper and broadcast media have been replaced by the world wide web. Part one will be held on Thursday, October 27, at 7 p.m. in WNMU Light Hall Auditorium.
Part two, “Storytelling versus disinformation,” will focus on Burleigh’s most recent book, “VIRUS: Vaccinations, The CDC, and the Hijacking of America’s Response to the Pandemic.” The book is six essays on the pandemic, including the political and policy response to Covid, the history of vaccines, the creation of the mRNA vaccine, and her investigations into the Stranger Things, the conspiracy theories that proliferated around virus and cure. She will discuss how the story of the vaccine was and was not told, highlighting the importance of science communication in the era of high technology, medical milestones, and weaponized disinformation. Part two will be held on Wednesday, November 2, at 7 p.m. in the WNMU Global Resource Center.
Burleigh will take questions.
