WNMU Ceramics Visiting Artist Penelope Van Grinsven will speak on Ceramic Ritual and Performance at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Parotti Hall.
Ritual objects imbued with ceremonial power allow communities to engage in collective acts. Tracing this power and ceramics’ central role in it from explicit rituals like tea ceremonies to more informal rituals, like those makers in their studios, Van Grinsven seeks to understand the role of ceramics in cultural customs and how ceramic sculptures and vessels serve as repositories for collective memories.
