Marketing Students Partner With Community To Promote Events, Small Businesses

Silver City, NM – Marketing students at Western New Mexico University are not waiting to receive their degrees to begin advertising their newfound expertise in Silver City. Marketing professor Dr. Steve Walker and his students are paving the way for the newly introduced marketing degree program by partnering with several organizations in the community as promotions teams. A year ago, Walker introduced his students to group initiative opportunities by developing business models for Corre Caminos, a public transportation company in Grant County; and BikeWorks, a non-profit community bicycle workshop. This spring, his students are partnering with BikeWorks for its annual Pedalista! event and with the WNMU Outdoor Program. “One of the greatest criticisms I’ve heard from employers,” Walker said, “is that we, in education, put out students who can pass tests or quote material, but not apply it. Students in the Occupational Therapy Assistant program are hosting a community health fair on Friday, April 25 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Graham Gym. Alumni Events Scheduled For 47th Annual Great Race

The Alumni Affairs Office has scheduled several events to take place during the 47th Annual Great Race weekend for alumni returning to their alma mater. In celebration of Western New Mexico University’s biggest tradition, alumni can register for a daylong schedule of activities for only $35. The fee includes a breakfast and Bloody Mary Bar in the Sunset Room on campus at 8:30 a.m., lunch following the race at 2:00 p.m. in the Intramural Gym, and a cocktail hour at the home of President Shepard beginning at 6:00 p.m. Alumni arriving to campus early can pick up their Great Race Packets at the Mustang Festival at Old James Stadium on Friday, April 25 beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Mustang Festival is a new community event that will feature booths by local organizations, food vendors and live music by the Brandon Perrault Band. MCAT+ Program Offered This Summer For Pre-Med Students

Silver City, NM – The MCAT+ Program is an intense and rewarding six-week summer camp held in the Natural Sciences department at Western New Mexico University. The program is open to junior and senior college students and graduate students from June 16 through July 25. Students in the program receive a stipend of up to $1500 and over 50 hours of in-class test prep instruction covering the four sections of the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). MCAT+ is designed to help strengthen MCAT test scores and train pre-medical students to become competitive to enter medical school. Highlights of the program include tours of the healthcare teaching facilities at the UNM Health Science Center and at Hidalgo Medical Services, and mock interviews and application workshops on medical school admission process. Community Groups Invited To Mustang Festival

Silver City, NM – A new community event has been added to the annual Great Race week of activities celebrated at Western New Mexico University. The Mustang Festival will take place Friday, April 25 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Old James Stadium. The family friendly event will feature live music by the Brandon Perrault Band, children’s games and university information booths. Community organizations and businesses are invited to register for a vendor booth at only $25 per application. One table will be provided for each booth. Kappa Delta Pi Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

Silver City NM -- Kappa Delta Pi, an education honor society student organization at Western New Mexico University, will celebrate its fifth anniversary since inception, on Monday, April 7. A “Great Gabsy” themed dinner and dance will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Graham Gym. The community is invited to attend this event. Board of Regents Meet For Strategic Planning Workshop

Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University Board of Regents members met for a strategic planning workshop on Friday, March 21, to discuss the university’s upcoming accreditation visit and the development of the ongoing Master Facilities Plan. The development of a new strategic plan was presented to regent members as the university transforms to meet the needs of future students and community. The discussion focused on the initial phases of the strategic plan and the drafting of the new mission and vision statement. “The mission and vision are who we are and who we want to be,” said Kathie Gilbert, Special Assistant to the President for Quality Initiatives. “The strategic plan is how we are going to get there.” At its afternoon public session meeting, the board approved the university’s new mission and vision statements as well as values and goals. Cesar Chavez Day To Be Celebrated With Music And Acting

Silver City, NM – Cesar Chavez Day will be commemorated on Monday, March 31 with several events at the Western New Mexico University campus. Known as a day of service, and officially celebrated in nine states including Colorado, Texas and California, Cesar Chavez Day events begin at 6:00 a.m. in the MEChA Building with fasting and prayer for education. Simultaneously, videos, poetry and discussions via an open mic session will take place. At 11:00 a.m., the Mustang Drumline will lead a campus-wide march for education and social justice. Marchers will make their way through several campus buildings encouraging students and community members to join. The march will end at the Student Memorial Building where a lunch will be served for $7.25. WNMU Partners With Town Of Silver City To Increase Campus Recycling

Silver City NM -- Western New Mexico University recently furthered its commitment to recycling on campus by partnering with the Town of Silver City Single-Stream Recycling Plan, resulting in a doubling of volume in recyclable materials collected.  The effort comes in addition to an existing partnership between the university’s Physical Plant Department and the WNMU Eco-Sustainability student club, which has seen recycling efforts increase since it was formed in 2012. “There were many times the Eco-Sustainability Club could have given up and stopped pushing recycling altogether,” explained Eco-Sustainability Club President Erica Michelle Rasmussen.   “It took a group of passionate people that said "This needs to change" and with the collaborative effort of the community, several departments on campus and our activists, it did.” Recycling efforts were given a boost when Eco-Sustainability member April Lee applied for and received the Coca-Cola ‘Keep America...
