Western New Mexico University continues its rapid pace of internationalization, reaching out to university partners in Mexico and forming agreements of understanding with two institutions during the month of June.

WNMU officials visited the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL) earlier in the month to create a letter of intent between the two universities.

The letter of intent details the intention of collaboration and the possibilities of faculty and student exchanges.

“UANL is a perfect school to collaborate with because of WNMU’s goal to expand learning opportunities across the border,” said Dr. Miguel Narvaez, WNMU professor of kinesiology. “Our specific collaboration with the UANL sports organization will open possibilities for exchanges from both our institutions.”

The agreement details several goals including curriculum mobility, dual degree programs and sports collaborations to include hosting coaching clinics.

UANL is a public university with seven campuses based in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon. Established in 1933, UANL has the third largest student population in Mexico.

WNMU signed a second agreement on June 22, with the Universidad Autonoma De Chihuaha (UACH), a public university based in the city of Chihuahua, Mexico with more than 25,000 students.

UACH officials visited the Silver City campus on Monday and Tuesday, taking a tour of campus and meeting with WNMU officials in hopes of establishing relationships leading to faculty and student exchanges.

A collaborate agreement was signed by officials from both universities on Tuesday detailing the new relationship. Agreement goals include conducting joint research activities and publications and the exchange of scholars to participate in conferences and symposiums.

WNMU students are expected to begin internship and exchange hours in the upcoming academic year.
