As the semester nears its end, the Office of Career Services is reaching out to local and regional business owners and employers hoping to hire from the nearly 300 students that will be earning degrees in May. Graduating students will be earning certificate, associate, baccalaureate and master degrees, many of them looking for their first job outside of school. “Our students are eager to enter the workforce and make a difference,” said Vanessa Stroman, Career Services Coordinator. “Our plan is to build as many connections as possible between employers and our students.” Stroman is the new to the position, and is building relations with organizations who are hiring throughout the region. The Rotary Club of Silver City, NM, in conjunction with Western New Mexico University and Silver Screen Society, have launched a film competition for the documentation of the invasion of Columbus, NM by Pancho Villa. The film documentation will take place during the Centennial in Columbus, NM, March 9-12, 2016. Participants are invited to join WNMU students, faculty and others for the Centennial events in Columbus, NM. The final editing can be finished the following weekend at WNMU (optional). There are three filmmaker entry categories: High School students, University students, and Independents. Prizes of $500 for each category will be awarded. Scholarships at WNMU will also be awarded. Western New Mexico University has partnered with the Grant County Detention Center, initiating several programs beginning with a Christmas gift project for the children of those incarcerated. WNMU’s Office of Communications and Mustang Entertainment, a university student programming group, reached out to Mike Carillo, Grant County Detention Center Administrator, to develop programming for students to participate in the community. "There are segments of our community population that often get forgotten, and those include the families of those in jail," said Khari Bailey, WNMU student and chair of Mustang Entertainment. "So we thought a good first step was to bring some cheer to the kids of the incarcerated." WNMU purchased and wrapped over 70 gifts with the help of Carillo who provided a list of children and their ages. During student teaching, teacher candidates create a teaching event, which is a carefully planned learning segment that is documented via lesson plans, copies of instructional and assessment materials, one or two video clips of the candidate teaching, a summary of whole class learning, and an analysis of student work samples created. During the action learning presentations, the student teachers describe their teaching events and demonstrate how they provided active learning experiences to the students in their assigned classrooms. Western New Mexico’s new fitness center, including the renovated swimming pool, will not be opening on Monday, September 21 as originally scheduled. The delay is due to an inspection that did not take place on Thursday, September 17. “We had a scheduled visit by the state’s CID inspector on Thursday,” said Stan Pena, Director of Facilities. “No one showed up and we now expect the inspection to happen next week.” The university anticipates that the inspection, facilitated by the Construction Industries Division inspector, will occur no later than Tuesday, September 22 and that the facility will be open to public use following the state inspector’s approval. “From our end, we are ready to open for our students and the community,” said Pena. Students and faculty of Western New Mexico University’s clay department will hold its 10th Annual Friends of Clay Pottery Sale on Saturday, March 21, from 9am to 3pm, at 614 N. Bullard in downtown Silver City, across from Alotta Gelato. The sale will feature a great selection of pottery and clay art works donated by current and former WNMU clay students, faculty, and professional potters. All proceeds from the sale will be used for the benefit of Western’s clay program. Sponsored by “Friends of Clay,” the annual pottery sales have grown in size each year since 2005, and have been an astounding success. Funds raised by the group are used to enhance and promote ceramics and the WNMU clay program through the offering of lectures, workshops, trips, scholarships, as well as assisting in the purchase of equipment and supplies for the university clay studio.
