After making New Mexico his home, John Stermer continued to exhibit in New Mexico, Texas and Arizona.  He traveled throughout the western United States as head of the Silver City Arts Council (also known as the Mimbres Region Arts Council), which he founded, and as a New Mexico Arts Commissioner.
