A pair of speakers, Drs. Ryan and Amanda Ashley, will discuss advances in cancer research this Friday, October 18, 2 – 4 p.m. in Harlan Hall 219.

Ryan’s lab focuses on progesterone’s actions mediated by membrane receptors and chemokines’ effects in early pregnancy and breast cancer as well as on the role that chemokine receptor 4 and its ligand play during early pregnancy. The aim is to explain the functions of membrane progesterone receptors in normal and compromised pregnancies, as well as their roles in reproductive cancers.

Amanda’s research focuses on replication of genetic information, a fundamental biological process common to all living organisms, and the maintenance of its integrity. Her lab is researching mechanisms to sensitize triple negative breast cancer (TBNC) cells to doxorubicin. TNBC is a clinical subtype disproportionately fatal to women of African American and Latina descent, in part due to resistance they develop to the chemotherapeutic agent, doxorubicin. Her lab’s goal is to reveal new targets in this breast cancer subtype.

Both talks, which will cover student research opportunities and graduate school opportunities, are part of the Natural Sciences Speaker Series sponsored by NM-INBRE and WNMU Natural Sciences Department.
