Encalyptaceae
The Encalyptaceae are acrocarpous (vertical growth pattern.) The leaves have small, quadrate cells that are sometimes colored at the base. The plants grow in small tufts and rarely form larger aggregates or sods. The most distinguishing feature of Encalypta is the appearance of the unique "partly inflated sausage balloon" appearance of the sporophyte with its calyptra attached.
