Symposium To Feature Academic Work From Over 200 Students

Silver City, NM – More than 230 students are scheduled to present at the 9th Annual Academic/Research Symposium and Career Fair on Tuesday, May 6 in the Miller Library. Presentations will cover a wide array of subjects including Adaptive Aid in Occupational Therapy, Nursing Leadership and Sustainability in Education. Open to the public, the oral and poster presentations begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Miller Library. Opening remarks will be given by WNMU Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Felipe Ortego. An awards ceremony, following the presentations, is scheduled for 12:15pm. Local and regional businesses will also be present for the Career Fair occurring simultaneously. Regents Approve Tuition Rate, Marketing Degree

Silver City, NM – Tuition and fee rates where set for the new academic year by the Board of Regents at its April 28 meeting. Tuition for a full-time, in state student will be $148.42 per credit hour, representing an $8.40 or six percent increase. “Once again we made every possible effort to keep our tuition low and affordable for the students we serve,” said Isaac Brundage, Vice-President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. “With the new rate, we expect to maintain affordability while continuing to deliver quality in the classroom.” All students, regardless of their state of residency, can pay in-state tuition during the summer session. The Board, followed the recommendation of the Student Fees Committee, and approved a new student fee rate of $67.44 per credit hour, a $17.54 increase from the current rate. Five Students Will Be Inducted Into Student Hall Of Fame

Silver City, NM – Five Western New Mexico University students will be inducted into the Student Hall of Fame with a ceremony on Thursday, May 1 at 3:00 p.m. in the Global Resource Center. Each year WNMU honors exemplary students who excel in several areas including leadership, academic achievement, community involvement and participation in campus life. The 2014 class of inductees are Kathryn (Ollie) Hoelscher, Anna Johnson, Erica Rasmussen, Edna Reyes and Marcos Villanueva. Kathryn (Ollie) Hoelscher is from Las Cruces, New Mexico. She is graduating in May with a baccalaureate degree in sociology with a minor in women’s studies. Hoelscher has been active in the Silver City community coordinating the One Billion Rising event, acting in the V-Day presentations, presenting at the annual Hunger For Knowledge fundraiser and coordinating Take Back The Night. Polynesian Night To Feature Island Food, Performances

Silver City, NM – Polynesian students at Western New Mexico University will be showcasing traditions in music and food at the second annual Polynesian Night on Saturday, May 3 at 6:00 p.m. in Old James Stadium. Organized by the Polynesian Club, at least 17 students can describe themselves as either 100 percent or part Polynesian. They originate from different ethnic backgrounds including Hawaiian, Tongan, New Zealand, Samoan, Tahitian and Fijian. The event will include musical performances by Polynesian Club members representing six islands. Club members will also cook and serve an authentic dinner including drinks and desserts. Marketing Students Partner With Community To Promote Events, Small Businesses

Silver City, NM – Marketing students at Western New Mexico University are not waiting to receive their degrees to begin advertising their newfound expertise in Silver City. Marketing professor Dr. Steve Walker and his students are paving the way for the newly introduced marketing degree program by partnering with several organizations in the community as promotions teams. A year ago, Walker introduced his students to group initiative opportunities by developing business models for Corre Caminos, a public transportation company in Grant County; and BikeWorks, a non-profit community bicycle workshop. This spring, his students are partnering with BikeWorks for its annual Pedalista! event and with the WNMU Outdoor Program. “One of the greatest criticisms I’ve heard from employers,” Walker said, “is that we, in education, put out students who can pass tests or quote material, but not apply it. Alumni Events Scheduled For 47th Annual Great Race

The Alumni Affairs Office has scheduled several events to take place during the 47th Annual Great Race weekend for alumni returning to their alma mater. In celebration of Western New Mexico University’s biggest tradition, alumni can register for a daylong schedule of activities for only $35. The fee includes a breakfast and Bloody Mary Bar in the Sunset Room on campus at 8:30 a.m., lunch following the race at 2:00 p.m. in the Intramural Gym, and a cocktail hour at the home of President Shepard beginning at 6:00 p.m. Alumni arriving to campus early can pick up their Great Race Packets at the Mustang Festival at Old James Stadium on Friday, April 25 beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Mustang Festival is a new community event that will feature booths by local organizations, food vendors and live music by the Brandon Perrault Band. MCAT+ Program Offered This Summer For Pre-Med Students

Silver City, NM – The MCAT+ Program is an intense and rewarding six-week summer camp held in the Natural Sciences department at Western New Mexico University. The program is open to junior and senior college students and graduate students from June 16 through July 25. Students in the program receive a stipend of up to $1500 and over 50 hours of in-class test prep instruction covering the four sections of the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). MCAT+ is designed to help strengthen MCAT test scores and train pre-medical students to become competitive to enter medical school. Highlights of the program include tours of the healthcare teaching facilities at the UNM Health Science Center and at Hidalgo Medical Services, and mock interviews and application workshops on medical school admission process. Community Groups Invited To Mustang Festival

Silver City, NM – A new community event has been added to the annual Great Race week of activities celebrated at Western New Mexico University. The Mustang Festival will take place Friday, April 25 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Old James Stadium. The family friendly event will feature live music by the Brandon Perrault Band, children’s games and university information booths. Community organizations and businesses are invited to register for a vendor booth at only $25 per application. One table will be provided for each booth.
